The Water Polo Performance Squad caters for the top players in both the Men's and Women's squads providing them a more advanced training programme to better prepare for the challenges of a tough season. Typically, a player in the Water Polo Performance Squad will have played prior to their arrival at the University or have progressed to become a regular in match day squads. The Performance Squad train almost every day of the week, across 8 hours of pool time and an extended gym programme including weight-based sessions and a weekly circuit training session.
The Water Polo Performance Squad is proudly working in partnership with Lancaster City Swimming and Water Polo Club's highly successful Water Polo set up.
Training with Lancaster City involves 2 combined weekly sessions based at Lancaster City's Salt Ayre Leisure Centre giving the squad members the opportunity to train alongside one of Britain's most successful clubs and holder of 11 National and 9 British Water Polo titles. Lancaster City is also home to four London 2012 Olympians and four Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games athletes. Multiple members of our squad have been able to contribute directly to this success and compete for Lancaster City in the National League.
The partnership is led by LUSWP Head Coach and Lancaster City Head Coach, Andrew Wilson, and he works to prepare the Men's and Women's Water Polo teams for the core university competitions. Each year the Men's and Women's team enter the BUCS League and Cup competitions, the Blackpool & District league, the Roses Varsity and both competitive and friendly fixtures for the University and Lancaster City. The Water Polo Performance Squad is also supported with sports science guidance.
