CHARITY EVENTS Throughout the academic year LUSWP organises and participates in a number of events in aid of several different charities. This allows us to help worthy causes that are close to our hearts whilst physically challenging ourselves in the process. Many of these charity events come in the form of charity swimming galas and charity water polo tournaments and matches which not only allow us to support some amazing causes but it also gives many of our members a greater opportunity to compete outside of the main BUCS set up.
Our first charity event that we organise annually is called Duel in the Pool. This is a varsity style competition against Leeds University Union Swimming & Water Polo Club. This involves a swimming gala against each other worth a total of 2 points (1 for men's swimming and 1 for women's swimming), a men's full four quarter water polo match worth 1 point and a women's full four quarter water polo match also worth one point. This is a great competition as it introduces 1st year students to a varsity style competition in preparation for Roses, whilst raising money for fantastic causes such as the RLNI and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
Our second charity event that is organised annually is the 15-Hour Charity Swim. The very first of this event was organised and run in February 2020. The event involved the whole of the LUSWP membership swimming as far as possible in 15 hours whilst raising money for Mind UK. This event was a huge success not only in terms of money raised but also the distance swum in the 15 hour period. The total raised was a staggering £1,870 and the total distance covered was an incredible 286.9km with 9 of our members reaching or surpassing 10km individually! A huge thank you to Sport Lancaster for allowing us to run the event at our home pool.
